SCP's core value proposition is that we provide attractive financing to businesses that implement a social hiring program.
What is a social hiring program?
A social hiring program is a conscious HR strategy that positions employment for 'job ready' groups of people who have experienced difficulty getting (back) into the workforce.
SCP works with the businesses we fund to develop and implement the social hiring program as a value-added service. This involves a 4 step process:
- Step One: Understand company's overall HR model - e.g. wages & compensation, opportunities for career laddering, training and benefit programs, employee incentives, HR culture
- Step Two: Define specific job(s) to target social hiring program within overall HR model
- Step Three: Determine best social hire profile(s) to recruit for those jobs
- Step Four: Determine best community agencies to recruit job ready candidates
SCP portfolio organizations gain access to an entire network of community-based employment programs that exist across the country to help people with barriers to employment re-enter the workforce. This is an established sub-sector of the Canadian not-for-profit landscape but the vast majority of Canadian employers are not aware of this employment programming and/or do not have the internal resources or incentives to educate themselves and do the necessary outreach.
This outreach and understanding is SCP's business.
How does SCP make it easy to implement a social hiring program?
SCP operates like a broker or intermediary on behalf of our portfolio companies by doing all the upfront engagement and marketing to the local community programs/agencies. Our services are provided to either corporate or franchised dealers. Over the past several years we have developed specialized recruitment tools and processes to engage:
- the employment counselors/job developers who deliver pre-employment training and services; and
- the clients of these programs who are actively looking for employment.
Some examples of employment programs and the agencies SCP works with are:
- Job Connect Program - provincially funded program delivered by the college sector and independent non profit organizations;
- Ontario Works Program - funded by the province and delivered through municipalities
- Targeted Wage Subsidy Program- federally funded program delivered through independent non profit organizations;
- YMCA and YWCA - employment services - national charitable networks that operate programs listed above;
- Goodwill Industries - International charitable organization with national scope in Canada dedicated to helping marginalized people in our communities access meaningful employment;
- Other employment programs/organizations that serve women, Aboriginals, new Canadians, youth, long term unemployed
What makes it compelling for companies to implement a social hiring program?
Our core mission is to help disadvantaged groups to get back into the workforce and establish sustainable livelihoods. To do this the private sector needs to be engaged in new and different ways.
SCP's package of attractive financing and HR advisory support services has several compelling features to engage companies in the practice of social hiring:
- Opportunity to re-think HR structure and address recruitment and human capital development issues
- Opportunity to develop innovative strategies to fill gaps in hiring entry level employees
- Access additional recruiting channels and connect with job ready candidates
- Access expertise as a value added service to develop and implement program at no additional cost
- Access possible wage subsidies through government sponsored programs
